Local Filmmakers Announce Feature Film Production
Conch Republic Pictures officially announced today that their film, “Saving Elena,” will begin production in Key West. To kick-off its launch, a 2 minute theatrical teaser will premiere at the Tropic Cinema at 416 Eaton St on January 21, 2005, as part of the Film Society’s Meet the Director Series. It will be introduced by the film’s director, Mark Darby Slater, and producer, S. Runi Goyal.
The film, “Saving Elena,” is based on a true story that took place in 1930’s Key West. A young Cuban-American woman, diagnosed with tuberculosis, is the object of a German x-ray technician’s infatuation. The writer/director, Mr. Slater, breathes life into this classic tale. Photography begins in April of 2005.
“This project has been a labor of love for many years, and its importance to the local community cannot be minimized,” says Slater, “I am proud to live here and proud to tell this story. It is fitting that the premier of our theatrical teaser be held at the Film Society’s Tropic Cinema, an organization committed to helping filmmakers like me.”
The Key West Film Society, from its first gathering of film-lovers in 1998, has grown from weekly screenings in rented spaces to a state-of-the-art theater and film institute that hosts educational workshops.
“Showing this particular theatrical teaser as part of our Meet the Director Series,” says Michael Shields, Executive Director of the Key West Film Society, “is a unique experience. Not only do we meet local talented filmmakers, we get to see and understand the director’s vision BEFORE the film is actually made. We’re involved with the process from the beginning. This is truly special.”
A private viewing for cast, crew and press will be held on Sunday January 16, 2005.
